Besides alcohol and tobacco, there are several lifestyle drugs, such as Viagra, Levitra, etc., which are used for improving life, function and appearance.  Though not used for therapeutic purposes, these drugs might still need a prescription due to its potential to be tremendously addictive and dangerous. In fact, they are harmful and perilous to such a great extent that they can completely alter a person’s mental and physical state.

Several researches and studies have projected the deleterious effects of drugs. Though these drugs are commonly prescribed as a preventive and curative measure, many users start displaying the symptoms of dependence from their first dose. Drugs, illegal or prescribed, can cause severe complications in both body and mind.

Brushing up the knowledge about different types of lifestyle drugs

“Lifestyle drugs” is a term used to describe medicines that are used to treat lifestyle illnesses or diseases arising out of lifestyle choices, such as smoking, drinking, etc. With more than 23 different definitions for lifestyle drugs, it’s essential to understand the fact that lifestyle drugs are designed specifically to improve a person’s quality of life by treating less serious conditions, such as baldness, impotency, wrinkles, acne, weight loss, hair loss, insomnia and sexual dysfunction.

  • Erectile dysfunction drugs: According to some of the media reports, the wonder pill Viagra has been prescribed to over 30 million men in 120 countries and following its release was prescribed at a rate of 10,000 a day. Used for treating erectile dysfunction that leads to impotence among males, the spike in the consumption of Viagra has caused many adverse consequences among the masses. A large number of men are now resorting to Viagra for keeping their sexual life active. As a result, it has affected millions of people worldwide. Other drugs that have bloomed for erectile dysfunction are Levitra and Cialis.
  • Weight loss drugs: Prescription weight loss medicines like diethylpropion, benzphetamine, phendimetrazine, phentermine, mazindol or orlistat have gained much popularity in recent times. Weight loss medications may cause severe implications, including, nausea, headache, constipation, diarrhea, sleep issues, etc.
  • Cosmetic drugs: Botulinum toxin injections, dermal fillers, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, etc. are often used to improve one’s appearance, such as lifting saggy face or enhancing breasts. Such drugs are prone to causing a range of side effects, such as allergic reaction, rashes, itching, headache, shortness of breath, muscle weakness, stomach pain, etc.
  • Attention and energy enhancing drugs: Provigil or modafinil is used to treat excessive sleepiness caused by sleep apnea or narcolepsy. They work by altering the neurotransmitters in the brain. Provigil can impair one’s thinking capacity and may even lead to depression, anxiety, hallucinations, suicidal thoughts or actions, etc.

Endorsements and advertisements boost market share of lifestyle drugs

Besides the above-mentioned lifestyle drugs, drugs, such as birth control pills, smoking cessation drugs, hair loss drugs, etc., have received a high demand in the market. Despite being aware of the repercussions, users are getting more and more fascinated by the concept of lifestyle drugs to solve their problems not considered medically serious. These drugs not only cause negative consequences on physical health, but also affect the mental health.

The reason behind the exponential growth in the demand for lifestyle drugs seems to be complex and involves the need to cater to a modern man’s lifestyle issues pertaining to vigor, youth, beauty, intelligence, personality etc. Advertisements and endorsements by celebrities have also played a pivotal role in increasing the market share of lifestyle drugs.

Despite frequent alarms raised about the devastating effects of these drugs, people tend to choose them as a part of their life. Using lifestyle medications has become a fad. The enormous success of erectile dysfunction drugs and weight loss drugs are an example. Besides the severe side effects mentioned above, drug interactions can lead to long-term risks. Unfortunately, pharmaceutical companies are not paying heed to the above warnings in the bid to make more profit.

Road to recovery

Though claimed to be harmless, lifestyle drugs in the bid to ensure a beautiful and healthy life can turn dangerous.  It’s high time to look out for the effective means to curb the ever-expanding epidemic caused by lifestyle drugs.
